All About Railings

October 25, 2016

Though it may seem like a minor detail, railing plays a big part in the function and overall appearance of any deck. It’s often the first thing you see, so make sure it’s a good choice. There are tons of options available, so you can definitely find one that meets both your safety needs and your personal style.

Railing comes in several different materials. Wood is a class and can nicely match your wooden deck, but like your deck, it’ll require staining and maintenance to keep it looking good. Iron is durable, but heavy and hard to work with. Glass is beautiful but requires cleaning to keep it looking good. Composite and aluminum are a good alternative, requiring less maintenance and offering a versatile, attractive look.

Safety is obviously the most important thing when it comes to railing, especially if your deck is high off the ground. Decks that lie closer to the ground don’t require as many safety precautions, although a railing around the perimeter and handrail for the steps is always a good idea. But more-elevated decks need a little more, possibly a higher railing to reduce the risk of falling over. Consider a railing with more tightly spaced posts to prevent anything (or anyone) from falling through. You may also want to consider how much privacy you want. If you don’t want your railing to interrupt the view of your backyard, consider one with thin balusters in a dark color to blend in with the environment. However, if you want more privacy from neighbors, you might opt for railing with thicker posts to block the view and give yourself a little more seclusion.

The color and style of your railing will have the most impact, visually. This is a fun part of the process, and there are countless deck and railing pairings out there. You can coordinate it with your deck color so that they match. That’s a classic, foolproof choice if you want a cozy, traditional look. On the other hand, if you want to try something different or are having a hard time matching your deck color, you might try a contrasting look. You could do a light color, or even a crisp white, against a darker deck, or a rich brown or black railing against a lighter deck. Black or white are classic options that can compliment any backyard or color scheme. Dark colors give a modern feel and also tend to blend in more with the background, whereas lighter colors tend to make more of a statement.

And if you’re especially daring and want to get creative with it, go ahead! There’s no wrong answer when it comes to railing as long as you’re happy with the results. Don’t be afraid to mix colors and materials, using differently colors for the posts and balusters, playing with texture, and so on. Make it as dramatic or as subtle as you want. Whatever pairing or combination you choose will have a big impact on your backyard and your home’s aesthetic, so make sure you love it!

One more thing to take into consideration is your local building codes. Most towns and cities have rules regulating the construction of decks and railings. For example, the International Residential Code (IRC) requires guardrails if your deck is elevated 30 inches or more off the ground. There may also be rules governing the specific products and materials used, so before you buy anything, check to make sure it meets your city’s guidelines.

If you’re not sure what railing is right for you or just want to find out more about your options, call Deome2 Builders at 916-412-2517 to talk to our experts!

How High Will You Go?

August 12, 2016

Multi-level deck

Decks come in an amazing variety of styles, designs, materials, and heights. You can design one to suit any yard or home. One thing to think about before designing your dream deck is how high you want it to be. We build decks grade-level, raised, multi-level— whatever you want! A raised deck is common, but it partially depends on your home. Split-level homes often have the main living space on the second level. As a result, a deck for this style typically attaches to that level and sits high off the ground on sturdy posts like a pier. Or a multi-level deck with stairs in between could break up the space and create a more gradual descent. A house with a main level on the ground or slightly raised from the ground normally has a grade-level deck or one slightly raised, about one or two feet off the ground. Another option is an unattached deck out in your yard. Although these can be any height, they usually sit close to the ground as to blend in more with the yard.

Safety First

No matter what deck height you choose, you have to consider the safety aspects of it. A low-sitting deck is probably fine without railings, but one more than a few feet off the ground absolutely needs them. Decks are for relaxing— no one should have to worry about falling off it! A raised deck or multi-level deck also requires stairs, so you should take that into consideration. If you’d prefer a wheelchair accessible deck, we can build ramps too!

Our experts at Deome2 Builders can help you figure out the perfect deck for you. Call 916-412-2517 to get started today!

Designing Your New Deck

August 12, 2016

So you’ve made the decision to finally build the deck of your dreams. Now what? Starting out can be a little overwhelming, but our experts can help you every step of the way. Before you can do anything, you need to find your perfect deck design. Start off by looking at other decks, taking notes on what you like and what you don’t like. What’s your style? What is the style of your home and existing backyard structures? Take inspiration from what others have done, whether it’s decks you’ve seen in real life or pictures you come across online. Take pictures, print off images, or cut out clippings from magazines to create a vision board. Think of the mood you want to create and the function your deck will serve. Do you have a pool the deck will encircle? Or will you spend a lot of time out sunbathing on it? What purposes do you want your deck to serve? Keep these things in mind when coming up with your deck design.

What You’re Working With

Then, start figuring out the logistics of it. What are you working with? What is your budget? How big is your yard, and how much space do you want your deck to fill? Is your yard fairly level or does it slope? We can help design a deck that will work for any yard! If you want to start by sketching something out yourself, take a picture of the back of your house, print it out, put some tracing paper over it, and start sketching out what you’d like your deck to look like. Try a few different designs, and don’t forget railings, stairs, or a gazebo if that’s something you might want! Don’t worry if you’re not an artist; it’s just to help you visualize what you might want. But if that’s still too overwhelming, don’t worry! Our experts at Deome2 Builders will be happy to create a polished, customized design for you and your yard. We’re the professionals and we’re happy to help!

Get Your Perfect Deck Design

March 13, 2015

deck designNow is the perfect time to start thinking of ideas for the design of your new deck in California. Because we specialize in custom-built outdoor spaces, the options are nearly limitless with Deome2 Builders. So start dreaming of your perfect outdoor space to enjoy entertaining and relaxing in throughout the year. We can make it a reality!

An outdoor deck serves as the transition space between your home’s interior and your backyard. Keep this in mind when thinking of your deck design. Perhaps a covered area close to your home would ease the transition and create an inviting space for entertaining guests.

Work with the space you have. If your backyard slopes, add a multi-level deck to make the transition from house to yard more gradual. Or if you have a small space, consider just a single step or two to help that transition. It can work on any scale.

Because adding a deck to your home creates more space to enjoy, you should make it a space that invites people in to enjoy it. Consider the attraction of a main focal point. This could be a comfortable sitting area, a dining area, a pool or hot tub. Or maybe even add a fire pit for friends and family to gather around on mild, clear winter nights in California.

Since a good outdoor space can add monetary value to your home, building a new deck or patio can be an investment. That’s something to think about when deciding about your deck design budget. With so many sunny days to enjoy in California, you may spend more time on your deck than in your home! All the more reason to make your outdoor living space perfectly designed to fit your needs and style.
