Formerly known as Cave Valley, Cool is a small unincorporated community about 40 miles from Sacramento. It offers a peaceful rural residential environment to locals and tourists alike. Uncertainty shrouded the origins of the name for quite some time. Some locals believed that a beatnik named Todd Hausman coined the name in early 1947 on a cross-country road trip. Alternatively, some local historians claimed that the town was named during the days of the California Gold Rush after an Aaron Cool, but no records of him exist.
Area resident Jerry Pozo began researching the origin of the name in 2010. His findings turned up a Reverend Peter Y. Cool who had a mining career near Cave Valley, documented in his journal. Peter may have been called Brother Aaron — which means “of the mountains” — and thus, the confusion with the name Aaron Cool.
The town hosts the Way Too Cool 50 Kilometer run in early March. Starting and ending in the town, it follows sections of the Western States Trail with more than a 7,000-foot elevation change along the way.
