How to Care for Your Deck

October 10, 2016

If you have a composite deck, lucky you! Your low maintenance deck basically takes care of itself. However, if you have a wood deck, you know that it needs a little TLC from time to time. Although beautiful and traditional, wood decks are more vulnerable to the elements and require the occasional stain or sealant application to keep them looking fresh. If your deck is starting to looks a little worse for the wear, it might be time for some deck maintenance.

Start off by cleaning your deck off, removing dirt with a pressure washer. Let it dry completely, waiting 24 hours. Make sure all boards are still in good shape, inspecting for rot, splintering, or loose boards.

Once you’ve made sure your deck is clean and structurally sound, it’s ready for a new coat of stain and sealant. Many types of lumber naturally resist insects and rot, but wood is still vulnerable to the elements. If you want to preserve it without changing the color, use a clear wood preservative. This will boost its appearance and add protection without changing the color of the wood. Or if you want to touch up the color, use an exterior stain in a semi-transparent finish, then a wood preservative after the stain has completely dried.

Wear protective goggles and gloves to avoid making contact with any harmful chemicals. Apply the stain or finish with a roller or brush. Let it soak into the wood for about 20 minutes, then go over the surface with a brush again to give a more consistent finish. Then apply a second coat for good measure. Let the deck dry for 48 hours before applying a sealant to finish it off. Now your deck is as good as new!

Out with the Old, In with the New

August 12, 2016

No matter how well-taken care of, eventually all wood decks need repair. After years and years of exposure to the elements, some boards will fade and rot and need replacement. A faded deck could just be an eyesore, but some deck damage can be far more serious. Broken or rotting boards can be unsafe to walk on— no one wants to worry about the floor falling out beneath them!

Deck Repair

You should inspect your deck for damage at least once a year. Check not only the surface boards, but also the supports. Make sure the wood is in good condition, and look for any loose screws or boards. Tightening screws is fairly easy. Replacing boards can be done yourself— remove the screws to take out the damaged board and use it as a template to cut a new board of the same material. Check the surrounding boards to make sure they haven’t been affected.  Then make sure to use the same stain on the new board so it matches the rest of your deck. To reduce future damage, make sure you properly stain your deck once a year to keep it as bug and weather resistant as possible.

If there is rot or a significant amount of damage, it’s best to bring in a professional. Deome2 Builders can help find an affordable, practical solution to get your deck back in good shape.

Get Your Deck Ready for Spring

March 13, 2015

spring cleaning deckThe winter months are almost over and, like it or not, your deck has probably taken a beating. A spring makeover will rejuvenate your deck, and in addition, it can preserve the deck’s long-term health.

One of the greatest benefits of composite decking is that you don’t need to stain it each year. However, your outdoor living space will require a thorough cleaning at least once throughout the year.

Start by cleaning and sweeping away any leaves and refuse. Use a broom or leaf blower to remove debris from the surface and from between boards. Then scrub heavily soiled areas with a deck brush.

If you have outdoor carpets, roll them out and look for any snags in the fibers that pose a walking hazard. Give your deck good spray with a pressured hose. You can use a power washer if it can withstand that pressure. Bring your outdoor furniture out of storage (if you store it elsewhere) or uncover it and wipe it down. If you have teak furniture, it may need to be stained. Then inspect all furniture cushions and pillows for possible mold.

If you decorate with potted plants, scrub the flowerpots with warm water. Be careful not to use soap or chemicals that can harm your plants. Additionally, fill planter boxes with new spring vines and flowers and reduce maintenance by adding water-retention polymers and slow release fertilizer.

Now trim any shrubs and branches that may have started to overhand or grow into pathways or sitting areas. Lastly, do a perimeter check of your entire outdoor living area. Inspect landscape lights for burned out or damaged bulbs, and replace them as necessary.

Most importantly, get out there and enjoy your deck!
