Designing Your New Deck

August 12, 2016

So you’ve made the decision to finally build the deck of your dreams. Now what? Starting out can be a little overwhelming, but our experts can help you every step of the way. Before you can do anything, you need to find your perfect deck design. Start off by looking at other decks, taking notes on what you like and what you don’t like. What’s your style? What is the style of your home and existing backyard structures? Take inspiration from what others have done, whether it’s decks you’ve seen in real life or pictures you come across online. Take pictures, print off images, or cut out clippings from magazines to create a vision board. Think of the mood you want to create and the function your deck will serve. Do you have a pool the deck will encircle? Or will you spend a lot of time out sunbathing on it? What purposes do you want your deck to serve? Keep these things in mind when coming up with your deck design.

What You’re Working With

Then, start figuring out the logistics of it. What are you working with? What is your budget? How big is your yard, and how much space do you want your deck to fill? Is your yard fairly level or does it slope? We can help design a deck that will work for any yard! If you want to start by sketching something out yourself, take a picture of the back of your house, print it out, put some tracing paper over it, and start sketching out what you’d like your deck to look like. Try a few different designs, and don’t forget railings, stairs, or a gazebo if that’s something you might want! Don’t worry if you’re not an artist; it’s just to help you visualize what you might want. But if that’s still too overwhelming, don’t worry! Our experts at Deome2 Builders will be happy to create a polished, customized design for you and your yard. We’re the professionals and we’re happy to help!

Planning the Perfect Backyard Party

August 5, 2016

Ahhh, summertime. Long days, breezy nights, the sound of crickets chirping— it’s the perfect time of year for a leisurely backyard get together. Before the days get too short and the kids go back to school, throw one more party to celebrate the summer! Of course, there’s always the casual option of having some friends over for a few beers. But if you’ve just finished your new deck construction (or are looking to start that, in which case, give us a call), why not show it off and put it to good use? Invite all your friends, family, or neighbors for one last blast of summer!

First, set the stage. Make sure your deck is clean and tidy. If it’s older and looks a little shabby, we can help refurbish it. We specialize in not only deck construction, but also deck repair and refinishing! Once you have a good surface to work on, spruce up your deck furniture and set it up in little clusters. This will break up the space on your deck and provide areas for people to gather around and converse with each other. If you’re going to have games like cornhole going, make sure to leave some room for that! Add festive pillows, table clothes, and decorative objects.

Then create some ambiance. Even if your party starts before sundown, make sure you’ll have enough lighting to keep it going into the evening. String up some pretty strands of lights around your deck railings or up on your pergola if you have one. If you have a fire pit, make sure you have plenty of fuel to keep it going. Set out a couple of blankets if it’s going to be chilly.

Of course, you can’t forget about food. If you know how to grill, you can’t go wrong with a backyard barbecue. Hotdogs and hamburgers are summer classics, or if you don’t have the time or expertise, there’s no shame in doing sandwiches, ordering pizza, or having a potluck. Just make sure there are enough options that everyone can find something they like. And don’t forget about plates, napkins, and utensils! Set out coolers or drink buckets near the food and make sure to chill all your drinks beforehand.

When the party’s about to begin, set out the food and drinks, turn on background music, and light some candles to set the mood. (If there will be kids or pets around, battery-operated candles are a good idea.) Put on your party clothes, get ready to greet your guests, and then relax. Your deck looks great and everyone is going to have a wonderful time!

Outdoors is the New Indoors

August 5, 2016

The top decking trend of 2016 is this: outdoors are the new indoors. As the options for outdoor luxury increase, people are spending more time outside than ever. It makes sense that people love spending time outside, especially in the spring and summer months. Even more so here in northern California — we have the perfect climate to enjoy being outside year round.

Outdoor furniture and technology have advanced greatly in recent years. Gone are the days when your only options were a stiff wooden picnic table and maybe some Adirondack chairs. Now the selection of outdoor furniture available is nearly as diverse as indoor furniture. You can find pieces suited to any style or function, too. Tables, chairs, sectionals, loveseats, even pillows and rugs designed specifically to withstand the elements. Now you can be just as comfortable sitting out on your deck or patio as you are in your living room! It just makes sense. After all, what’s the point of having a backyard if you’re not going to enjoy it?

Set the Mood

Outdoor lighting allows you to get more use out of your deck as well. Good lighting lets you continue to relax outside long after the sun goes down. And a fire pit is a great choice for providing ambiance and warmth on chilly nights in northern California. Furnishings and decor that reflect your personality are important too. If you create a beautiful, usable space for yourself, you’ll naturally find yourself spending more time outdoors enjoying it. With the advances in outdoor decor and furnishings, it’s possible to make your deck look just as inviting as the interior of your home.

This mentality of extending the home outside goes so far as to suggest recreating your home outdoors, in a way. Many people naturally set up their space this way anyway. But now there’s been a deliberate effort to set up outdoor spaces with different areas for different activities. There might be an area for grilling, a different space for sunbathing, a separate seating area beyond that, and so on. And for those who take their backyard barbecues very seriously, fully functional outdoor kitchens are becoming an option!

Find a Design that Works for You

Multi-level decks are an excellent way to break up the space and create a natural separation between areas. A popular option is placing a barbecue grill and table on the level nearest the house, a seating area on the next level, and maybe a pool or hot tub on the level below that. By doing this, you create a nice flow into the backyard, and it’s great for entertaining.

Even on a single-level deck, setting up different areas breaks a large space into smaller, more intimate areas. This allows guests to feel comfortable wandering between and mingling in. A multi-level deck or the addition of a gazebo or pergola makes a statement and very clearly defines different sections. On the other hand, if you prefer a less-noticeable separation, arranging your furniture and leaving spaces between focal points can subtly break up an outdoor space.

No matter how you do it, bringing a little of your home outdoors will be a worthwhile endeavor. Make good use of your space and you’ll have an outdoor escape to enjoy the sunshine in northern California all year long. Whether you need a deck or just want to add a gazebo or fence, we can help. Deome2 Builders will be happy to help you create the backyard of your dreams here in northern California!

Decorating Your Deck

July 26, 2016

While a deck itself can have a strong influence on your backyard, the way you decorate it changes the feeling too. Even if your deck is fairly basic, adding furniture, greenery, and extras can take it to the next level.  Little additions have a big impact. Deck decor can completely change the mood of your outside living space and create a perfect backyard escape.

Tropical deck
Leafy plants and wicker furniture turns this deck into a tropical getaway.

To create a tropical retreat in your backyard, add lots of exotic plants, tropical prints, and wicker patio furniture. Breezy palms or colorful umbrellas can add shade, while birds of paradise or hibiscus flower can provide a pop of color. You can easily find tropical-looking deck furniture and cushions or towels with bright leafy or floral prints. Add some tiki torches or a fire pit and you’ll feel like you’re lounging at a Hawaiian resort!

If you prefer a quieter charm, try faded furniture and soft colors for a shabby chic feel. Go for rustic-looking wood deck furniture and vintage-looking fabrics. Add pretty flower pots and maybe a tiny floral-patterned outdoor rug or tablecloth for a whimsical look. Or go for deeper, earthy-toned fabrics and add some big Adirondack chairs for a lodge-like space to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors in.

Or if a contemporary look is more your speed, try sleek furniture with lots of straight lines. Less is often more with a modern style, so a few statement-making additions are all you need. A sharp-lined sectional adds ample seating. Brightly colored pillows in solid colors pack a punch. Try adding an interesting fountain or light fixture for a cool, contemporary escape. Or soften the colors and add a little more green to feel like you’re at a resort and spa!

So much of it comes down to personal taste. You can always select specific deck decor to create a certain feel, but if choosing a style is too overwhelming, just choose what you like. Everyone gravitates towards certain patterns, colors, and styles. Even if you can’t figure out what your style is, a theme will start to emerge in your choices. Just pick what you like, and your deck will inevitably end up with a style that is effortlessly and distinctively you.

Get Your Perfect Deck Design

March 13, 2015

deck designNow is the perfect time to start thinking of ideas for the design of your new deck in California. Because we specialize in custom-built outdoor spaces, the options are nearly limitless with Deome2 Builders. So start dreaming of your perfect outdoor space to enjoy entertaining and relaxing in throughout the year. We can make it a reality!

An outdoor deck serves as the transition space between your home’s interior and your backyard. Keep this in mind when thinking of your deck design. Perhaps a covered area close to your home would ease the transition and create an inviting space for entertaining guests.

Work with the space you have. If your backyard slopes, add a multi-level deck to make the transition from house to yard more gradual. Or if you have a small space, consider just a single step or two to help that transition. It can work on any scale.

Because adding a deck to your home creates more space to enjoy, you should make it a space that invites people in to enjoy it. Consider the attraction of a main focal point. This could be a comfortable sitting area, a dining area, a pool or hot tub. Or maybe even add a fire pit for friends and family to gather around on mild, clear winter nights in California.

Since a good outdoor space can add monetary value to your home, building a new deck or patio can be an investment. That’s something to think about when deciding about your deck design budget. With so many sunny days to enjoy in California, you may spend more time on your deck than in your home! All the more reason to make your outdoor living space perfectly designed to fit your needs and style.
