Decorating Your Deck

July 26, 2016

While a deck itself can have a strong influence on your backyard, the way you decorate it changes the feeling too. Even if your deck is fairly basic, adding furniture, greenery, and extras can take it to the next level.  Little additions have a big impact. Deck decor can completely change the mood of your outside living space and create a perfect backyard escape.

Tropical deck
Leafy plants and wicker furniture turns this deck into a tropical getaway.

To create a tropical retreat in your backyard, add lots of exotic plants, tropical prints, and wicker patio furniture. Breezy palms or colorful umbrellas can add shade, while birds of paradise or hibiscus flower can provide a pop of color. You can easily find tropical-looking deck furniture and cushions or towels with bright leafy or floral prints. Add some tiki torches or a fire pit and you’ll feel like you’re lounging at a Hawaiian resort!

If you prefer a quieter charm, try faded furniture and soft colors for a shabby chic feel. Go for rustic-looking wood deck furniture and vintage-looking fabrics. Add pretty flower pots and maybe a tiny floral-patterned outdoor rug or tablecloth for a whimsical look. Or go for deeper, earthy-toned fabrics and add some big Adirondack chairs for a lodge-like space to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors in.

Or if a contemporary look is more your speed, try sleek furniture with lots of straight lines. Less is often more with a modern style, so a few statement-making additions are all you need. A sharp-lined sectional adds ample seating. Brightly colored pillows in solid colors pack a punch. Try adding an interesting fountain or light fixture for a cool, contemporary escape. Or soften the colors and add a little more green to feel like you’re at a resort and spa!

So much of it comes down to personal taste. You can always select specific deck decor to create a certain feel, but if choosing a style is too overwhelming, just choose what you like. Everyone gravitates towards certain patterns, colors, and styles. Even if you can’t figure out what your style is, a theme will start to emerge in your choices. Just pick what you like, and your deck will inevitably end up with a style that is effortlessly and distinctively you.

Get Your Perfect Deck Design

March 13, 2015

deck designNow is the perfect time to start thinking of ideas for the design of your new deck in California. Because we specialize in custom-built outdoor spaces, the options are nearly limitless with Deome2 Builders. So start dreaming of your perfect outdoor space to enjoy entertaining and relaxing in throughout the year. We can make it a reality!

An outdoor deck serves as the transition space between your home’s interior and your backyard. Keep this in mind when thinking of your deck design. Perhaps a covered area close to your home would ease the transition and create an inviting space for entertaining guests.

Work with the space you have. If your backyard slopes, add a multi-level deck to make the transition from house to yard more gradual. Or if you have a small space, consider just a single step or two to help that transition. It can work on any scale.

Because adding a deck to your home creates more space to enjoy, you should make it a space that invites people in to enjoy it. Consider the attraction of a main focal point. This could be a comfortable sitting area, a dining area, a pool or hot tub. Or maybe even add a fire pit for friends and family to gather around on mild, clear winter nights in California.

Since a good outdoor space can add monetary value to your home, building a new deck or patio can be an investment. That’s something to think about when deciding about your deck design budget. With so many sunny days to enjoy in California, you may spend more time on your deck than in your home! All the more reason to make your outdoor living space perfectly designed to fit your needs and style.

Get Your Deck Ready for Spring

March 13, 2015

spring cleaning deckThe winter months are almost over and, like it or not, your deck has probably taken a beating. A spring makeover will rejuvenate your deck, and in addition, it can preserve the deck’s long-term health.

One of the greatest benefits of composite decking is that you don’t need to stain it each year. However, your outdoor living space will require a thorough cleaning at least once throughout the year.

Start by cleaning and sweeping away any leaves and refuse. Use a broom or leaf blower to remove debris from the surface and from between boards. Then scrub heavily soiled areas with a deck brush.

If you have outdoor carpets, roll them out and look for any snags in the fibers that pose a walking hazard. Give your deck good spray with a pressured hose. You can use a power washer if it can withstand that pressure. Bring your outdoor furniture out of storage (if you store it elsewhere) or uncover it and wipe it down. If you have teak furniture, it may need to be stained. Then inspect all furniture cushions and pillows for possible mold.

If you decorate with potted plants, scrub the flowerpots with warm water. Be careful not to use soap or chemicals that can harm your plants. Additionally, fill planter boxes with new spring vines and flowers and reduce maintenance by adding water-retention polymers and slow release fertilizer.

Now trim any shrubs and branches that may have started to overhand or grow into pathways or sitting areas. Lastly, do a perimeter check of your entire outdoor living area. Inspect landscape lights for burned out or damaged bulbs, and replace them as necessary.

Most importantly, get out there and enjoy your deck!
